Marine Biology Reflection Rubric


Marine Biology 2012 – Reflection

Complete the following three sections (Summary, Reflection, Creativity) as you look back and reflect on what you learned and experienced through your marine biology trip.

Summary (5 points):
·       Spend a minimum of ½ a page summarize your experience.
o   You can summarize your experience by re-telling what happened, creating a list of events, capturing different moments in a story, poetry, photo essay, etc…

Reflection (10 points): ***MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE REFLECTION***
·      List 5 reasons WHY the Marine Biology trips are an important part of the middle school experience at Sunnyside. EXPLAIN.
·      What does Marine Biology mean to you?
·      List 3 things you learned about “Marine Biology” through your experience
·      List 3 things you learned about yourself on this trip (***most important question of this section***)
·      Spend 1 paragraph convincing others of the importance of going on a marine biology trip at the end of the year
·      Come up with three words that capture the big ideas of your marine biology experience ‘

Optional  - extra credit:

Creativity (5 points): Complete one of the following prompts as your creative piece



I. WRITING: Choose 1 of the following:
***This should be a minimum of 1 page***
  • An editorial or letter to the editor
  • A feature article that supplies facts about an area or issue
  • A short-story that relates to Marine Biology
  • A fake interview written as a newspaper article with someone in the marine biology field
  • A biography about a famous marine biographer
  • A travel article on a place to see marine life

II. ART: Choose 1 of the following to create a marine biology graphics page:

  • Collage
  • Photograph Essay
  • Maps
  • Labeled diagram (habitat, anatomy)
  • Ocean scene
  • Ocean food web
  • Choice (check with teacher)


III. CREATIVITY: Choose from 1 of the following to create and connect to your marine
         biology experience

  • Cartoon, poetry, recipe related things you saw, crossword puzzle/word search, graph, list of interesting facts, how-to-column related to marine biology, anything else you can think of!


IV. RESEARCH: Research an issue or conflict related to something you have learned about this year or on your marine biology trip.

·       In a minimum of ½ page complete the following:
·       Summarize the issue
·       Explain who is involved in the issue
·       What is currently being done to help or address this issue
·       What are things that can be done to help
