Multi-Cultural Reflection Rubric

Some of you may have already written up the reflection for your multi-cultural experience. If you have you can disregard the following rubric. For those that haven't done this yet, the following rubric for your reflection will be more helpful then the typical reflection rubric. Answering that questions below in an "essay format" will better connect to your multi-cultural experience then the typical questions.

Reminder that your multi-cultural experience reflection is due on Friday, June 1st and that you term 4 service reflection is due Monday, June

Multi-Cultural Reflection:

1)    Introduction: Explain what event you chose and why

2)    Background: In 1 – 2 paragraphs give some background on the culture you experienced.

3)    Body: If you can, describe what organization put on the event and some information about that group and its goals.

List and describe several ways this event tried to share the culture with you (examples include: food traditional dress, handicrafts, language, stories, performances, and/or religious ceremonies.)

****
The connections and conclusion are the two most most important parts of this reflection… Show what you thought/wondered/got out of this experience…Pay special attention to the two questions that are underlined and in bold
****

4)    Connections: Connect your multi-cultural experience to your own practices, customs, and culture. What are some similarities/differences? Discuss what the values of passing down customs and traditions to a younger generation. What customs have been passed down in your family and how do they compare to this experience?

What connections were you able to make to other things (personal experiences, things going on in our world, etc…) during this experience.

5)    Conclusion: Why do we have this assignment? What is the value of experiencing other cultures? What were the big ideas you got out of this experience? What do you want to know more about/experience more?

Service Reflection Rubric

Service Reflections Rubric:

-There should be a minimum of three paragraphs
-I am looking for a strong hook and conclusion... CONNECTIONS of your work to the outside communities and world...Correct grammar and punctuations, and of course a creative piece (please don't do the same creative piece over and over again on each reflection... spice it up)
-I would recommend doing your work on the computer as I often send back reflections for editing after I first receive them. Doing your work on the computer enables you to go back and make corrections without having to feel like you are starting all over again.

What?
•What did you do?
•Who was involved?
•Where were you?
•What part did you play?
•When did it happen?

Michael's comments: The "what" is a quick, brief paragraph. Recognize that you must go far beyond the “what” to have a complete reflection as paragraph takes little thought and effort to complete. Pay attention to the “so what” and give the MOST attention and thought to the “now what”

SO WHAT?
•Why did you do it?
•Why was it important to do?
•How was it helpful?
•Who benefits from the Project?

NOW WHAT?
•What are you going to do with what you learned?
•What will you keep doing (or not doing) now?
•How is this action connected to a larger issue? What larger issue?
•Who is doing something about this issue?
•What organizations exist to address this issue?

Always Consider…

you --> School --> COMMUNITY --> WORLD

Michael's notes: A paragraph should be spent showing how your work connects outside of your three hours of service to the greater community and world.

Michael's final note:
When looking at reflections I will always look for a hook, 3 paragraphs (with the NOW WHAT paragraph reflecting the most effort), and CONNECTIONS (showing how your work relates to bigger picture ideas).  Don't forget to add a "Creative Piece"

These are worth 25 points and show reflect a high level of effort and thought.

Wildlife Tour - Student Comments

I finished reading your Wildlife Tour essential questions. WOW! They were so full of insightful and meaningful comments. I was already extremely impressed by all of you based off what I saw during the Wildlife Tours but your thoughtful answers definitely added to my appreciation for what you accomplished with those 3rd graders from Jason Lee.

Anyways, here are your own thoughts/reflections from your Wildlife Tours Essential Questions....

Student Comments on Wildlife Tours

I think its really cool to be able to go and teach these kids. I like knowing that I helped them learn something new. It was great seeing their faces when they got really interested in something.

It was really cool to see them learn , ask questions, and have fun.

The biggest thing about wildlife tours is we learn more about ourselves

I did many things outside my comfort zone… This was something I did tog et past one of my fears and I took the chance and I really got through that fear!

It makes you realize how hard teaching is, but also how rewarding it can be!

I learned that I can have a lot of fun around little kids!

I realized how much I take this school and how we learn for granted.

Looking at the kids and noticing their glee at touching the real things and seeing their awe and amazement was special.

I really enjoyed the smiles I saw, the questions they asked. They were really into ti and I could really tell that they had never experienced learning like this before and that they enjoyed it

I learned talking in front of kids and being a leader isn’t as scary and as bad as I thought it would be.

If you have a good attitude anything can be fun.

This helped me because it made me step out of my comfort zone and even thought it was war hard I learned that I kind of like teaching the kids

I learned that I can have patience and can go with the flow.

My highlight was seeing all the kids so interested and engaged.

It helped me become more comfortable speaking out and sharing my knowledge
