Winter Break Life

Happy winter break folks. I hope your time away from school is filled with family, friends, relaxation, smiles, and reading.

Your homework over winter break is to continue reading daily for at least 20 minutes.

If you are having a hard time finding a good fit book during break, check out some of these options on either of these two links:

Books Middle Schoolers in Michael's Class Should Read!!!

Tuesday, December 4, 2018

12/4

Awesome job with your work on your Writing For Justice personal narratives and preparing our class for the Riparian Festival today.

Within all the work, I forgot to talk about tonight's homework... You can probably guess what it will be.

KEEP WORKING ON YOUR How Does Our Earth Work - Individual Interactive Project

Tonight spend 20 minutes continuing your work on your project.

This is going to be due Friday. You should try to have much of the interactive part of the project done by Thursday. We will spend time in class Thursday working on our projects and everyone will get enough teaching and time to do the write-up and connections web in class Thursday.

12/3

HW due Tuesday:

1. How Does Our Earth Work - Individual Interactive Project - work on this tonight for 26 minutes.

a. Complete Step 2: Planning + Research Organizer... You can fill this page of your green sheet out, write it down elsewhere, including a GoogleDoc. The important thing is that you know your response to these questions:
-What is my geology concept?
-What is my research question?
-How can I share my learning in an interactive way?
-What materials do I need?

If you have completed that, then move and get started with  making your interactive project! Again, we will do the write-up and connections web at school. Focus on the creating at home during your 26 minutes tonight if you get beyond step 2.

Weekend HW - Riparian Festival Project

I am sorry to say but this is one of the very few times where you will actually have real life weekend homework from me this year...

Weekend HW due Monday:

1. How Does Our Earth Work - Individual interactive Project
a. Spend 31 minutes total this weekend working on this project that we will celebrate and share next Friday at the Riparian Festival  (though you are welcome to spend more time on it if you get into it and have the space/energy to do so).

You don't need to write anything down from your work this weekend unless you want to. My goal is that you can come into class on Monday able to answer the following questions:

-What is my geology concept?
-What is my research question?
-How can I share my learning and response to my research question in an interactive way?
-What materials do I need to make this happen?

A reminder that we will do the project write-up and connections web in class, meaning you only need to focus your energy on the questions and work above.

The project will be due Friday, December 7th, though you should be pretty be much done with everything but the project write-up and connections web by the start of the school day Thursday.

How Does Our Earth Work - Individual interactive Project

HW due Friday:

1. How Does Our Earth Work - Individual interactive Project
a. Spend 22 minutes continuing your work from this afternoon on your How Our Earth Works - Individual Interactive Project... All you need to do tonight is spend 22 minutes continuing to think about which geologic concept you are most interested in further exploring through this project. You don't need to write anything down unless you want to. My hope is that you come to class tomorrow with an idea of which geologic concept you want to focus on and what your research question could be. We will spend more time in class tomorrow thinking about how you could create an interactive project showing your learning around that research question.

Geology - Volcano - Online Exploration

Geology - Volcano - Online Exploration
a. Read through the main volcanoes website
b. Click on any of the links you want, but you need to click on the links for volcano types (composite, shield, cinder cone)
c. Find other great resource to explore

Please keep your volume low or off (definitely off in the game!)

HW due Thursday:

We are not travelling tomorrow. We will be working on writing and geology and awesomeness throughout the day.

a. We spent time in class reading On Cracking White City and discussing and defining the terms Perpetrator, Target, Upstander, and Bystander. Using the Narrative Leads - Writing a Hook handout as your guide, write 3 different hooks (each hook only has to be 2- 5 sentences long... these are just the VERY beginning of the story you could tell) for a story or multiple stories that you put down on your Writing For Justice Graphic Organizer this afternoon. Don't spend more than 26 minutes on this.

2Post Conferences Student Reflection - If you need more time to complete this, just let me know.

...With the orange textbook that you took home today read pages 88-91 and and respond to questions 1-3 on p. 91. Read pages 93-102 and respond to questions 1-3 on p. 102. This is a continuation from our work this morning in class.

Don't forget to do the work on the side focused on convergent, divergent, and transform boundaries.

Michael's October Baby Leave - Homework, Grades, and Other Notes...

Hello Core Class Community!

First of all, you are all awesome. Thank you for being patient and flexible with me as I take this leave from school to take another leap on life's journey to welcome a new human being into my family's life.

The following is the only blog post I am going to make while I am gone. I want to fill you in on what to expect in terms of calendar stuff, field studies, homework, and grades.

Much of this is the exact same as what I shared in class on Friday, 10/5, but I wanted to put it into writing in case anyone forgot...

If you need to get in touch with Jeff via email to advocate for yourself or to share some work his email is t.jeffkessler@gmail.com

READ DAILY FOR 20-30 MINUTES!!!!!!

Grades:
This is the most current Grade Assignment Spreadsheet - Updated 10/14/18. This is a good indication of your progress in Term 1. Any missing work or resubmitted work should be turned into my HW Bin by 10/26 (the last day of Term 1). I will update this Grade Assignment Spreadsheet again on October 29th (the final grading day for Term 1) after working with Jeff to review your core class work during the two weeks you will be with him before the end of the term and after reviewing your E-Core, Writer's Workshop, and Reading journals. Make sure all 3 of your core class journals are turned by Friday, October 26th!!!

Together Michael and Jeff will be working on grades on Monday, October 29th. Your journals need to be submitted to receive full credit for you work while Jeff is your teacher. Without a journal turned in by the end of the day Friday, October 26th, Michael cannot give you full credit for your work. Turn in all journals by this day!!!!

A Note on Term 1 Service:
Because Michael did not do a good enough job making space to introduce, explain, and set expectations for service LEARNING with our current core class, you do not have any service reflections due in Term 1. This is the Service Learning Term 1 Reflection, but completing this is not required. You can turn this in by Friday, October 26th for Extra Credit. Know that you will have extended expectations for Term 2 + 3 + 4 that Michael will help to set once he returns. Any and all service learning completed in Term 1 will count towards future service learning expectations and reflections. Sorry for any confusion or inconvenience.

No school Monday, October 29th - Term 1 Grading Day
I will update this blog again on Monday, October 29th with info on what is going down for me in Baby Land, when I am returning to SES (currently this is unclear as I am waiting to see when my baby will arrive!), and what you can expect in the weeks ahead as we start Term 2.

HW due Tuesday:

1. Just Right Choice Fiction Novel
...Have your just right fiction novel in class tomorrow. This should be a fiction book that is a good fit for you (this includes graphic novels), that you have never read before, and that you can finish within 1 month. If this is going to be in class tomorrow you should communicate that with me before 8:40 am and have a plan for how you are going to get this book.

If you are still struggling to find a good fit book you should check out some of these options here: Books Middle Schoolers Should Read (I have many of these in my classroom)

2. Quote - Bring in a quote you stand for or a quote that you think best represents the way life should be lived.

...This quote can be written down, typed, printed. It can be from someone you know, someone you look up to, someone who is no longer living, or someone who is currently living (including your own self). It can be from a song or from a fictional character. It should be middle school appropriate. This quote will live on our wall all year long. Make sure you are willing to stand by it!

Here are some examples of quotes if you are struggling to come up with one: http://brightdrops.com/inspirational-quotes-for-kids

If you want more time to think about it you can have it as long as you let me know tomorrow before 8:40 (mjansa@pps.net).
