Michael's Clas Updates - Heading Into Winter Break

Hiya Core Class.

AWESOME WORK building up to the Riparian Festival. Your Writing for Justice narratives, How Our Earth Works interactive geology projects, and classroom Riparian Festival creations were beyond incredible. Through it all, I was most impressed by your positive attitude, engagement, critical thinking, commitment to our community and support of one another. The classroom looked and felt cool, but more importantly, it was an accurate representation of our fall learning and growth and everything oozed with creativity and joy. Well done!

Here are some updates and notes and links as you move into the final week before Winter Break.

Class Grades - Updated 12/8/17

Post Conference Student Reflections

On Monday you will get to select your "Mini-Classes" with Lynn. Your "Mini-Class" will be on Wednesday from 9:30 - 1:05 and Thursday from 9:30 - 3:15. No matter the class you end up, embrace the experience with a positive attitude, and I am confident you will learn something new and have a good time.

On Tuesday you will be taking your Geology Unit Post Assessment during core class. You are allowed to use your E-Core Journal during this assessment. It is nearly identical to the Geology Unit Pre Assessment you took and focuses on our main geological concepts and essential questions. Take some time before Tuesday to make sure your E-Core Journal is updated and that you know where to find things in it. I look forward to comparing your post assessment with your pre assessment and seeing how much you learned this fall.

You will receive your "Secret Snowflake" on Tuesday. The idea of "Secret Snowflake" is to celebrate Winter Break by sharing your creativity and excitement with one other person in our core class. Lynn will give you a handout with the name of your "Secret Snowflake" on it Tuesday. You can share 1 or 2 things with them on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday this week. You can share a piece of writing, a card, a drawing or creation, small treat or gift. You are not allowed to spend a penny more than $5 over the course of the entire process and you can't share more than 2 gifts. When you have something to share, slip it into your "Secret Snowflake's" cubby. You can also look to see if you got anything special in your cubby on those three days.

A reminder that you in addition to relaxing and enjoying friends and family, you should be reading daily during Winter Break. I encourage you try something new as a reader and to work to find yourself reading something that feels meaningful and engaging. You are welcome to take any of my Good Books (they got moved to the bookshelf by the heater and paper cutter). You can also check out this list of recommended books if you are looking for something to try and get your hands on: Books Middle Schoolers in Michael's Class Should Read. Anyone who emails me (mjansa@pps.net) over Winter Break and tells me what they are reading and what they think of it can earn some extra credit.

Thank you again in advance for owning our class expectations and positively representing our community during our week without me there while you work with Lynn, Jan, your Mini-Class teacher, and Mary Lloyd.

Have a great week and an amazing Winter Break and I look forward to re-connecting with you all in the new year!

Reed College Cooley Art Gallery Field Study Cancelled - SORRY!!!

Hi Core class Families,

I just found out that I have to cancel tomorrow's field study to Reed College Cooley Art Gallery. There was a sudden and unexpected maintenance issue in the gallery that has caused them to close it to the public (including middle schoolers who are scheduled to visit on a field study) for the immediate future. The Reed College art education coordinator, Gregory MacNaughton only found this out late this afternoon. Despite his efforts this afternoon he was unable to schedule us in an alternate space at Reed and had to officially cancel our visit tonight.

This is probably going to be disappointing to students. This is always an engaging and exciting field study, plus students always love getting to eat at the cafeteria. I thought the more warning, the better. You can let them know that I will work to make tomorrow an engaging and worthwhile day of school despite this bummer of an email. You can also tell them that there is much in this life we can't control, but we can own our attitude (I'm sure they will loooove to hear that)!

It would be great if students came to school tomorrow with a lunch if possible and headphones if they have them for our work using Learning Ally to support our independent reading.

Thanks,

Michael

11/15

HW due Thusrday:

1. Reed College Cooley Art Gallery Field Study
...We are leaving right at 9:00. Please don't be late, it would be a bummer if you missed out on this field study!

b. Write a 3-5 sentence summary capturing what you think are the big ideas of the story

Don't spend more than 27 minutes on this assignment. If you get past 27 minutes and aren't done, advocate (mjansa@pps.net), let me know where you got, and stop. We are going to use these paragraphs to support our writing in class tomorrow.

Thursday = Field Study to Reed College Cooley Art Gallery: http://www.reed.edu/gallery/

Consider using Learning Ally to support your reading at home. You know your login info (see the post below), just make sure you have the app on whatever device you use (the app is called "Learning Ally Link")

Learning Ally User Instructions:

User

How you or your students access the audiobooks on Learning Ally depends on what device you are using. Smartphones and tablets will need to have the Learning Ally App added to them prior to using. Chromebooks will need the Learning Ally Link App added to the doc (this can be found in the google chromebook store) Make sure it’s the one that says Learning Ally Link, not just Learning Ally.

Once you have downloaded the app on your device, login with the student username and password. A book will be available to download once it is added but can’t be listened to until it is downloaded. Think of it as sitting on a cloud until it is added to your device. This helps save space on your device. The Chromebook App will display titles that have been added to your account but not downloaded to the device by showing the cover with a blue arrow superimposed over it. Click the arrow to download it to the device and listen. Tablets will have two tabs - Listen and Download. Download has all the books on the account, Listen has the books that are downloaded to the device.

*If you are using a Chromebook, remember that Learning Ally Link will show up (and keep the place you are at) on whatever account you have logged your computer into. If you are logged into your teacher GAFE account (apps4pps) and then log a student into Learning Ally, you’ll need to always log into your account to access it. If it’s on a student account you’ll need to have them login to access their books.

Tomorrow you should come with a draft of your Age Poem completed and in the writing section of your Writer's Workshop journal. Look over the rubric to make sure you have the different 'writing moves' that I am expecting in your poem. Even if you think you finished in class today, you should spend more time editing and adding more detail based on the rubric. You should spend no more than 25 minutes working on this draft at home tonight.

10/16

Welcome back to the core class life!

HW due Tuesday:

1. What I Stand For card
...On a 1/2 sheet of paper, create a representation of 1 thing that you believe in and that you stand for. This is an extension of our conversation about service learning from before the Outdoor School week. Using at least 1 word and 1 image (though you are welcome to use waaaaay more) create a representation of what you stand for that fills the 1/2 sheet of paper. Folks can focus on a specific message or group such as Black Lives Matter or the Oregon Humane Society or they can focus on big ideas such as love or dancing. Because we worked on this in class this morning, you shouldn't have to spend more than 25 minutes working on this tonight unless you want to do more.

2. Have your choice fiction novel in class for silent reading tomorrow!

Looking ahead...

Wednesday = Late Opening (school starts at 10:45)
Thursday = Zoo Tunnel - Geologic Time field study
Friday = SES Move/Walk/Run (starting at 12:15)
Saturday = Harvest Fair (we will talk more about what this event is and about Harvest Fair service opportunities in our class meeting on Wednesday)

All students should be finished with their first choice fiction novel by this Friday, October 20th. If for some reason this is going to be a problem for you, come check in with me ASAP (don't wait until Thursday night).
